Nikolas Pitiris retains his Cyprus National Champion title

The four Finalists teed off in the Matchplay golfing weekend to determine the Aegean National Champion for Cyprus (under the auspices of Cyprus Golf Federation – CGF) at Aphrodite Hills GC on Saturday 21 January. The weather started and finished with sunny skies, but an hour’s rain in between presented an additional test for the Finalists.

In the first match, Alex Toouli (Secret Valley) triumphed by 2 and 1 over Jim Livie (Dhekelia) in a closely fought match which seesawed throughout the morning.

The second match was even more closely contested, with Demetris Paphitis (Nicosia Golf Club) nearly pulling off a Houdini like escape. After being four down with 5 to play, Demetris took the game to the last green, where he just missed a putt to force a play-off with last year’s Winner, Nikolas Pitiris (Aphrodite Hills).

On the Sunday, sunny skies prevailed, albeit with a cool wind. In the Final, the game between Nikolas Pitiris and Alex Toouli was closely fought until Nikolas ‘s putter began to find its range, resulting in him winning the match by 4 and 2. Nikolas’ feat of being National Champion two years running is remarkable for a 15-year-old.

In the runners up match, Demetris Paphitis overcame Jim Livie, winning by 4 and 3.
